Income Tax Refund Delay: Reasons, Status & What to Do

Income Tax Refund Delay

Waiting for an income tax refund can be frustrating, especially when you expected the money after filing your ITR. In many cases, the refund is not missing. It may still be under processing, held due to an issue with your return, or have failed because of a bank account problem.

The Income Tax Department states that refund processing starts after your return is e-verified. A refund usually takes around 4 to 5 weeks to reach your bank account. If you have been waiting longer, check your refund status and look for any message or notice from the department.

This guide explains the common reasons for an income tax refund delay, how to check your refund status and what you can do if the refund has failed.

Common Reasons for Income Tax Refund Delay

There can be several reasons why your refund has not reached your bank account.

1. Your ITR Has Not Been E-Verified

Your ITR filing process is not complete until you verify the return within the required time. The Income Tax Department starts refund processing only after e-verification.

If you have filed your return but have not completed verification, check your e-Filing account and complete the required action.

2. Your ITR Is Still Being Processed

Sometimes, there may be no error with your return. The department may still be processing it.

You can check the status of your filed return through the e-Filing portal. Go to e-File > Income Tax Returns > View Filed Returns and select the relevant Assessment Year. You can then view the return details and refund status.

3. Your Bank Account Is Not Pre-Validated

A refund may fail if the bank account linked to receive it has not been pre-validated.

The Income Tax Department requires a validated bank account for refund credit. If your refund has failed for this reason, add or validate the bank account on the e-Filing portal and then raise a refund reissue request.

4. Bank Details Are Incorrect

An incorrect bank detail can also cause a refund failure. The department lists issues such as an invalid IFSC code and a closed bank account among the reasons a refund may fail.

Check the bank details shown on your e-Filing account and make sure the account you want to use is valid and active.

5. Name Mismatch Between PAN and Bank Account

A mismatch between the name on your PAN records and the bank account can cause problems with refund credit.

If the refund has failed because of a name mismatch, correct the bank details where required, add the corrected account to the e-Filing portal, get it validated and submit a refund reissue request.

6. Outstanding Tax Demand

An outstanding tax demand can affect your refund. The Income Tax Department may adjust an eligible refund against an outstanding demand if the demand remains confirmed.

You can check for outstanding demands by logging in to the e-Filing portal and going to Pending Actions > Response to Outstanding Demand.

7. Defective Return Notice

If information is incomplete or inconsistent, then we can consider a return to be defective. The department may issue notice under section 139(9) of the Income Tax Act, 1961 for the relevant assessment years.

If you get a notice like this, read the reason for the notice carefully and respond within the time given in the notice. The department says the usual period is 15 days from the date of receipt of the notice unless a different period is specified.

How to Check Income Tax Refund Status

You can check your income tax refund status online through the Income Tax e-Filing portal.

Follow these steps:

  1. Log in to the Income Tax e-Filing portal.
  2. Go to e-File.
  3. Select Income Tax Returns.
  4. Click View Filed Returns.
  5. Select the relevant Assessment Year.
  6. Click View Details to see the status of your return and refund.

The refund status may show whether the refund has been issued, partially adjusted, fully adjusted or failed.

You should also check your registered email and mobile number for any communication from the Income Tax Department about your return or refund.

What to Do If Your Income Tax Refund Is Delayed

If your refund has taken longer than expected, start by checking the return and refund status on the e-Filing portal.

Then check:

  • Whether your ITR has been e-verified.
  • Whether your bank account is validated.
  • Whether the bank account details are correct.
  • Whether your PAN and bank account details match.
  • Whether there is an outstanding tax demand.
  • Whether you have received a notice or communication from the Income Tax Department.

If the refund status shows refund failed, correct the relevant bank issue and submit a Refund Reissue Request through the e-Filing portal. The department provides this facility for taxpayers whose refund could not be credited.

To raise the request, log in and go to Services > Refund Reissue. Select the relevant refund record, choose a validated bank account and complete e-verification.

When Should You Follow Up on a Refund?

“Normally it takes about 4 to 5 weeks after e-verification for a refund,” the Income Tax Department said. If you haven’t received it after this period, check your refund status and look for any discrepancy or communication from the department.

Don’t just use your bank statement. The e-Filing portal may show whether the refund was issued, adjusted or failed, which can help you determine the next step.

How to Avoid Income Tax Refund Delays

You can reduce the chance of refund problems by checking your details before submitting your ITR.

Make sure:

  • Your ITR is complete and accurate.
  • You e-verify the return after filing.
  • Your bank account is pre-validated.
  • Your bank account details and IFSC are correct.
  • Your PAN and bank account name match.
  • You check the e-Filing portal for notices and outstanding demands.

Conclusion

An income tax refund delay does not always mean that your refund has been rejected. The return may still be under processing, or the refund may have failed because of bank details, validation issues, an outstanding demand or another issue with the return.

Start by checking your refund status on the Income Tax e-Filing portal. If the refund has failed, fix the stated issue and submit a refund reissue request where applicable.
